iO Long Shades

A handmade plywood pendant range, designed and crafted in New Zealand by Mat Macmillan in Tauranga.

The iO range was conceived in 2014, born from a simple idea: that a well-made plywood pendant could carry the warmth and texture of timber while throwing the kind of soft, layered light you'd associate with much more elaborate fixtures. More than ten years on, each iO shade is still handcrafted using locally grown New Zealand plywood — a properly sustainable choice, made by hand, made to last.

iO Long Shades are tall cylindrical pendants — 600mm in height across the range — designed to throw warm, lantern-like light through vertical timber slats. The visual effect is calm and architectural, suited to spaces where you want presence without imposition.

Available in four diameters so you can match the size to your space — or mix sizes within a single installation:

• 140mm — the slimmest, ideal as a single bedside or reading-nook pendant
• 210mm — versatile mid-size, works above a kitchen bench
• 280mm — substantial single pendant for a dining or living space
• 375mm — the most generous, designed to anchor a room

The four diameters are designed to be clustered together for visual rhythm. A dining table with a 140, a 280, and a 375 hung at varying drops reads as a deliberate artisanal installation, not a matched set. Custom sizes are available on request — get in touch if you need something specific to your space.

Each shade is plywood with a Japanese Shoji paper diffuser inside (removable). Choose:

• Shade finish — natural plywood, or with black tips for a more graphic contrast (a 10% premium reflecting the additional finishing work)

Allow 6-8 weeks from order to dispatch.

This price is for a single shade only. Each shade requires an E27 lamp holder fitting. Suspension hardware (cord, lamp holder, canopy, and bulb) is sold separately — see the "Add Bulb and Fittings" option above, or browse our Lighting Accessories collection for ceiling plates and cords.
